As the saying goes, if you think hiring a professional is expensive, try hiring an amateur!
What happens when you don’t hire a London Ontario interior decorator and take it upon yourself to do it on your own?
What is the value an interior decorator brings to the table?
It’s a lot more than just knowing how to match colours, I can tell you that.
Let’s take a look at a recent project I had the pleasure of working on – it shows just how important an interior decorator can be in your home renovation project.
Setting The Stage
I had the pleasure to meet and work with a lovely couple in their 50’s who had a beautiful home in North London.
The home had a lot of potential but was looking quite tired and needed to be updated.
Their budget was tight and they were looking at any options in order to save and spend their money wisely.
I met with them a few times, we put together a plan for their wish list of renos.
That included:
- Refacing the kitchen cupboards
- Installing a new quartz countertop
- Replacing the kitchen flooring
- Painting most of the house
- Replacing the carpeting in the living room, bedrooms, and hallways
- Replacing the tiles around their fireplace
- Replacing the front door
While I might be an interior decorator, I have a long list of professional, reliable, and talented trades people I work with.
So I can take care of each of these items.
It worked out that they’d need five different trades people to accomplish this goal.
Who’s The Director?
Now, if you’ve never run a project like this before, you might think it’s just a matter of hiring the right trades people and telling them what you want them to do.
They’ll just work out what needs to be done between them and get it done, right?
Not quite.
What Can Go Wrong
In order for any project to run smoothly and effectively, it takes a lot of organizing and managing.
That’s where you need to hire an interior decorator for your project.
Yes, I can help you choose your paint colours and accessorize, but there’s a lot more to it than that.
A big part of my work involves coordinating the different trades people involved in your project, keeping everyone on track and the project on schedule.
What happens if one person doesn’t show up?
What happens if one person is late?
What happens if the trades people you hire don’t get along with each other?
What happens if one of them does a poor job?
A lot can go wrong when you’re coordinating a project like this.
That’s the benefit of hiring an interior decorator – because I’m not just an interior decorator, I’m a project manager.
I’ll coordinate all the moving parts in your project to make sure it executes flawlessly.
And if something does go wrong, I’ll take care of it.
What Happens When Things Do Go Wrong?
So what happened with my clients, the ones we talked about before?
We met with each of the trades, and I helped them choose colours and designs, and they felt like they could take it from there.
I appreciated that they felt the need to cut costs wherever possible, but expressed concern that it might be more than they could handle.
After all, both the husband and the wife had high profile full time jobs and had their hands full.
Without sound like I was trying to pressure them into using my services I told them I would honour their wishes but would be in their back pocket if they needed me in any way.
Well, it only took a couple of weeks into the renos before things started to go awry.
Some of the items ordered were going to take longer than anticipated.
One of the trades had a family emergency.
One of the deliveries for the tile floors was late.
This made my clients feel stressed and completely overwhelmed.
Everything was behind, the trades were going to now be on top of each other, and they didn’t know how to reorganize.
The clients called me and I immediately went into project 911.
It was time to make a few new arrangements, hire a new trade that had to be replaced due to the family emergency, and rectify all the issues.
My trades all know each other as I have been using them for years.
They know how I work and they were more than happy to accommodate the whole situation.
With some carful and strategic re-planning the project was up and moving smoothly again.
My point is, this is my job.
This is what I do.
Those TV shows you see where stuff goes wrong all the time?
It actually does happen like that in real life.
It gets my adrenaline going and my ultimate goal is to satisfy the client’s wishes and keep my trades happy and efficiently working together.
At the end of the day, the finished product was beautiful, clients were thrilled and everyone was happy.
How’s that for a happy ending?
