How To Create A Timeless Design For Your Home

How To Create A Timeless Design For Your Home | Mati Design Interior Decorator & Home Staging | London Ontario

What do you think of when you imagine a trendy designed home?

I guarantee it’s different than what anyone else is thinking as they read this article.

Because of course, design trends come and go, just like fashion trends.

Remember Monica’s apartment, from Friends?

It was really trendy when that show was on the air, but that’s not the case anymore.

That doesn’t mean it looks bad, of course.

You might really love the style of Monica’s apartment.

But that’s just it – “trendy” doesn’t mean “good.”

Often, when working with my home design and decorating clients, they’ll ask me what’s in style and what’s trendy.

But trends come and go.

That’s why I always ask…

Do You Want To Design Your Home To Be Trendy Or Timeless?

We’ve come a long way from the days of decorating “theme rooms.”

Floral chintz from the English garden look of the 80’s.

Jungle and southwestern décor of the 90’s.

Tuscan kitchens of the early 2000’s.

The list goes on.

These styles were all the rage in their day, but these days we’ve moved on to new interior design trends.

But how many of us keep up with the trends every year?

Do you ditch your entire wardrobe every spring and buy everything brand new?

If you’re like most people, certainly not.

That sounds exhausting!

Most people will buy a few new pieces every year, and incorporate them into their existing wardrobe.

Design trends are like that, but even moreso.

After all, if it seems exhausting to replace your wardrobe, imagine doing an interior redesign of your home every season!

On the other hand, traditional style is a tried and true look that’s ever evolving.

Mixing traditional or vintage and antique finds with modern accessories can create a beautiful eclectic look that never truly never goes out of style.

Let’s take a look at how.

Tips To Achieve A Timeless Home Design Style

1. Keep Your Furniture Neutral

It might seem “boring” to get a couch that’s beige, tan, or grey.

But these colours go with everything.

Do you have a funky area rug you love?

How about that fantastic vintage hutch you inherited from your grandparents?

Maybe you’re a big fan of loud, bombastic artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat or Keith Haring.

No problem, it all works with neutral furniture.

Neutral furniture will allow your statement pieces to stand out more, without overwhelming the eye.

2. Keep Your Wall Colours Neutral As Well

The same is true for choosing your wall colours.

Often, I hear from clients who hired a residential painting company to paint their home, only to end up hating it.

But here’s the thing – painting contractors don’t necessarily have an eye for design.

They’ll paint what you want them to paint.

But it doesn’t necessarily mesh with the rest of your home.

Keeping your wall colours fairly neutral will allow your accent pieces to really pop.

Of course, you can always do an accent wall as well.

3. Personalize It

Style magazines and blogs are great.

Clearly you agree – you’re reading one right now!

I can purchase all kinds of beautiful and stunning pieces for client’s home and make any space look like it came out of a style magazine.

But these are designed to give you ideas for how to design your home, not to copy them.

When it comes to your home, it’s important to personalize it.

We all have those special items in our drawers, cabinets, closets, etc.

You know, those special items gifted to us from our parents and ancestors.

Like many people, you might not know how to display them.

In many cases, these items can be truly beautiful pieces that just haven’t gotten the right environment to shine.

Adding these precious pieces into your home’s décor is a lovely way to incorporate your history and the story of your life.

They also make wonderful conversation starters.

4. Accessorize With The Trendy Stuff

Combining your classic and vintage pieces with some modern trendy items can go a long way toward updating your home.

This can mean cushions, wall art, area rugs, and various knickknacks and accessories.

This can help you create a whole new look, without breaking the bank each time you want a refresh.
